Shining Light on a Dark Beer

What’s the deal with black IPA anyway? Plus, we’ve got more taproom events on the horizon and a new release on Friday!

A Message from the Brewer

Our second collaboration with Lat 65 Brewing Company is a rich, dark and hoppy Black IPA: At Dawn, We Ride.

First conceived in October of 2023, this collaboration slowly took shape over the following months. Having settled on a Black IPA, Josh and I had to decide if we wanted to head down the more roasty, resiny Cascadian Dark Ale route or the smooth, citrusy Black IPA route. We decided on the latter. We chose a base of pilsner malt and accented it with a good dose of Munich malt for some rich malt character and a touch of Pale Chocolate malt for a smooth milk chocolate character. To dial in the color of the beer we used a German product called Sinamar. Sinamar is a dark malt extract made in accordance with Reinheitsgebot. We hopped the beer with Australian Eclipse hops for some delicious Mandarin Orange character and conditioned the beer on orange peel and vanilla to enhance those smooth citrus and chocolate flavors.

Come give it a try if you haven't already. Currently on tap and in 4-packs and moving quickly.

Pop-Up Today

Join us today from 4PM to 7PM for a pop-up with returning artist Lacey Picket (Cosmic Clay AK)! Lacey’s clay earrings are cute as can be, and you’ve probably seen a few of our taproom team members sporting some! Swing by to score a pair or two for yourself and a friend, all while enjoying a sour beer slushie or refreshing cider!

Stay tuned for updates on additional pop-ups, and get ready for our pop-ups to head outside soon!

Now on Tap

Brand spankin’ new on tap and in cans is I Like Giants West Coast Pale Ale! Brewed with this year’s Pink Boots Society hops blend, this beer is crisp and refreshing, with herbal and citrus notes to boot (pun intended). Enjoy a pint at our taproom this weekend!

Upcoming Events

You can catch us at the 17th Annual Taste of Alaska Beer Festival at the Pub at UAF this Saturday, April 27 from 6PM to 10PM. This bangin’ annual beer festival celebrates craft beer and cider from around Alaska and is a great opportunity to revisit your favorite brews and sample the latest releases! Tickets are available at the Pub now for $35 each or at the door day-of for $40 each. This event is 21+ only.

Black Spruce is delighted to host local artist Lacey Picket (Cosmic Clay AK) for a fresh pop-up TODAY from 4PM to 7PM! Lacey’s clay earrings feature a variety of fun, seasonal subjects and make a delightful addition to anyone’s jewelry collection!

On April 27, the start of early voting for the FNSB’s special election to vote on Prop A, we’ll kick off our Golden Heart Strong School Lunch Fundraiser. For each pint or 4-pack of Golden Heart Off-Dry Cider or Short Days Golden Ale purchased from our taproom, Black Spruce will donate $1 to the FNSB School District Nutrition Services Fund. This fund  helps to ensure that students who do not have funds still have access to nutritious lunch and breakfast meals, and you can donate to this fund HERE. This fundraiser was organized with help from Golden Heart Strong and will run April 27-May 7. All FNSB registered voters are encouraged to participate in this special election. Election day is May 7.

Our next First Friday is coming up next Friday, May 3 and will feature photography by creative collective, a group of students from the UAF Photography Department! This stellar student showcase will feature a variety of subjects and will be on display all month long.

Anchorage and Mat-Su accounts, we’re comin’ for ya! Our next round of Anchorage and Mat-Su deliveries will be on May 6 & 7. Prepare yourself for a whole mess of new releases, including a new collab and a fresh lager!
